Poll: Trump Approval Rating Hits New Low

| by Robert Fowler

President Donald Trump's favorability has dipped to a new low following a series of bombshell media reports, new polling indicates.

A Morning Consult/Politico survey released on May 19 found that only 41 percent of national adults approved of Trump's job performance, while 53 percent disapproved. The net negative of 12 percentage points for the president marked his lowest approval rating recorded by the polling group.

On April 20, Morning Consult found Trump's approval to be 51 percent, while 45 percent disapproved of him. Since then, the president's approval rating has steadily declined, arriving at its lowest point amid a week of negative press coverage.

The national, online survey queried registered voters on their knowledge and opinions of two recent news stories about the president, finding that a majority were aware of them.

The first story concerned Trump's disclosure of sensitive counter terrorism intelligence to the Russian foreign minister and Russian ambassador to the U.S. during a private White House meeting on May 10. The information Trump disclosed had been provided by a key U.S. ally and could have potentially compromised an asset within the Islamic State group, The Washington Post reports.

Eighty-four percent of respondents said they were familiar with the news story, and 58 percent said Trump was wrong to make the disclosure to Russian officials. Breaking down the data, the survey found that 85 percent of Democrats and 59 percent of independents disapproved of Trump sharing the information, while only 27 percent of Republicans felt the same.

The next story concerned former FBI Director James Comey's memo that recorded Trump allegedly asking him to drop a federal investigation into former White House national security adviser Michael Flynn. The president allegedly requested Comey drop the probe during a private meeting, The New York Times reports.

The survey found that 50 percent of respondents disapproved of Trump asking Comey to drop the investigation, if the memo is true. A plurality of Republican respondents were not bothered by the alleged request, with 54 percent stating it was appropriate.

Meanwhile, 50 percent of overall respondents said Trump was not capable of serving as commander-in-chief, and 52 percent were skeptical that he would be able to keep the country safe from terrorism.

Aggregating the seven national surveys released between May 13 and May 18, RealClearPolitics found that Trump has an average approval rating of 40 percent while an average 55 percent disapprove of his job performance.
