A semi-truck truck carrying 44,000 pounds of fireworks exploded in Kalamazoo County, Michigan, at around 10:00 a.m. this morning.
The truck was part of a 150-vehicle pileup on Interstate 94.
The fireworks ignited, creating a massive explosion, reports Fox 17 (video below).
A male trucker from Quebec died in the pileup, which left another 23 people injured, noted the Detroit News.
"Hazmat officials believe that hazardous material that was on scene is probably entirely burned off by now, so what we're asking for now is for shelter in place, where anyone within one mile of the crash scene, we're just asking them if they have not evacuated to stay inside," Michigan State Police Lieutenant Rick Pazder told the Detroit Free Press this afternoon.
Weather is believed to have played a factor in the mass crash as there was heavy snow, low visibility and the temperature was 8 degrees.
