A heartbreaking story out of North Carolina. Megan Riggans, 22, was killed in a car crash while being driven to a hospital by her husband Brian on Sunday night, reports the Daily Mail.
Riggans was in labor and was going to give birth when the car crashed in Staley, North Carolina, during a severe thunderstorm.
Around 10 p.m., Riggans' car hydroplaned off a wet road and slammed into a tree.
State Trooper J.R. Zachary, of the North Carolina Highway Patrol, told the Burlington Times-News that Riggans was not wearing a seat-belt, which caused her to get tossed around the car.
When emergency personnel arrived, Riggans was unconscious and taken to Alamance Regional Medical Center, where doctors delivered her baby boy.
However, Riggans was later pronounced dead from her car accident injuries.
The boy was transferred to UNC Chapel Hill Hospital, as was Riggans’ husband who had injuries to his face and back.
Officer Zachary said that doctors did not know the extent of the baby's injuries due to lack of oxygen, during the crash.
The couple were married in April of 2012 and were expecting the child this month.
