DeLand, Fla., police officer J.P. Harris was fired on Friday after he allegedly ran over suspect Marlon Brown with his police car and killed him (video below).
A dashboard video from Harris' car recorded the officer pursuing and running over Brown for not wearing a seatbelt on May 8, according to DeLand Police Chief Bill Ridgway.
Brown was originally being chased by police from another area, but DeLand police joined the chase. Harris allegedly drove more than 100 feet off the road and through a backyard fence where he ran over and killed Brown in a vegetable garden.
“This is a regrettable and tragic situation for everyone involved,” Ridgway said. “This decision was made in the best interests of the community, the city and the department. It should be noted that the traffic accident involving Marlon Brown’s death is still under active investigation by the Florida Highway Patrol. Due to that ongoing investigation, I am unable to comment further.”
“I can’t sleep and can’t eat and I have this vision in my head,” Laheia Olvera told The Daytona Beach News-Journal. “From his neck to his waist, he was completely smashed. His head was swelled up.”
Olvera was in the car with Brown.
Brown’s ex-wife, Krystal, told News 4: “We actually want charges. Just a termination is not good enough, but it’s a start.”
