The Gerstle family, who were rescued by George Zimmerman, cancelled a news conference on Wednesday because they reportedly do not want to be associated with the former neighborhood watchman.
The Sanford Police Department announced last week that Zimmerman helped pull the family of four out of an overturned SUV.
According to a friend of the family, Mark and Dana Gerstle do not want to be seen as trying to make Zimmerman look heroic.
“There is so much hatred directed towards him they have got to think about their own family. There are a lot of crazies out there. If they say anything in support of him it could backfire,” the friend told the Daily Mail.
Zimmerman's attorney Mark O’Mara told CNN today (video below) that people are claiming the rescue was staged, but couldn't name exactly who those people were.
“The same people who refuse to accept the jury’s verdict, just want to be angry, just want to hate George Zimmerman, are still going to. Even if we had a videotape of the accident, they would still say it was made up. So you can’t really respond to people who just don’t want to listen to the truth,'' said O’Mara.
