One Direction Star's Mother Dies Of Cancer

| by John Freund

Louis Tomlinson, one of the members of British pop band One Direction, lost his mother to leukemia.

Johannah Deakin, 42, left behind seven children, including 24-year-old Tomlinson, who is the oldest, the Daily Mail reports. She was also a grandmother to Tomlinson’s 10-month-old son, Freddie.

Tomlinson is set to perform at the U.K. finale of reality singing show "X Factor," and will do so in a tribute to his mother. She was reportedly looking forward to watching her son perform on the same stage where he first became famous.

The family released a statement about her death:

It is with immeasurable sadness that Johannah Deakin's family said goodbye to Johannah in the early hours of Wednesday 7th December 2016. Earlier this year Johannah was diagnosed with a very aggressive form of leukaemia that required immediate and continuous treatment. We respectfully request that the family are given time and space to grieve in private.

Johannah’s husband, Dr. Dan Deakin, also paid tribute to his late wife:

Johannah was first and foremost a truly amazing mother to seven children ... whose individual talents and success are testament to the principles and beliefs she instilled in them. She was also an incredibly proud grandmother to Freddie.

Incredibly selfless, she would always look to put other people before herself. She desired nothing more than for everyone around her to be happy and loving. She worked tirelessly on numerous charity campaigns, creating memories for many individuals and their families. It wasn't uncommon for Johannah to hear through the media of an individual in need of assistance, and she would immediately make it her objective to get that person what they often desperately needed, and rarely without success.

Five weeks ago, in what turned out to be her last Instagram post, Johannah shared a photo of Tomlinson with a caption that read, "My perfect boy."

Johannah gave birth to Tomlinson when she was 18 years old, but split from his father, Troy Austin, in 1997, when Louis was 5. She went on to have four children with Mark Tomlinson. She married Dan in 2013, and the couple have 2-year-old twins together. Johannah worked as a midwife and TV assistant during her career.

Celebrities have sent their condolences on Twitter, including Tomlinson’s bandmates from One Direction, as well as the band's manager, Simon Cowell, and Zayn Malik, who quit the band last year.

Fans offered their support on social media. One Facebook user wrote, “It's sad, I've been there lost my mum at a young age when I needed her and always will as a woman. But no matter what age a son always needs their mum too. A mums love can never be replaced x.”

Another added, “Oh goodness she was my age and such a pretty lady. All those poor children without a mama. Prayers for peace and comfort to the family during this devastating time and prayers that the children will feel their mother's presence and know her even through stories from others as they grow.”

Funeral plans have not yet been announced.
