San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick was benched after setting an unwanted new record during a game against the Chicago Bears Dec. 4.
In the beginning of the fourth quarter during the game, Kaepernick was benched and replaced with backup quarterback Blaine Gabbert after a disastrous first three quarters.
Kaepernick became the first quarterback in NFL history to throw for fewer than five yards and get sacked five times in one game, reports The Blaze. The 49ers quarterback only made one completion in the first three quarters.
According to ESPN, Kaepernick ended the game with a QB rating of 39.6.

Despite the poor performance, Kaepernick told reporters that he was "surprised" by the decision to bench him in the fourth quarter.
"It wasn't something I was expecting," Kaepernick said after the game. "I am always prepared and ready to do everything I can do to help this team win."
He said that he understands the decision of the coaches, however.
"It's not about my feelings. It's about being able to help this team win," Kaepernick continued. "This coaching staff didn't feel like I was out there being able to help this team win, so they made a change, whether I agree with that or not."

The quarterback says that he attributes the snowy Chicago weather as part of the reason for his rough performance.
"More than anything, it's tougher throwing a wet football, but once again it's something that we have to be better at in being able to handle that," he said.
The 49ers lost the game to the Bears 26 to 6.
When the backup quarterback was put in for the fourth quarter, he threw an 18-yard completion on his first play.
Many football fans took to Twitter to criticize Kaepernick for his performance during the game.
"I was excited to hear that Colin Kaepernick got benched," one user wrote. "Now he can kneel during the whole game. America is applauding!"
"Colin Kaepernick is proving to be much better at kneeling than playing QB. He became first NFL QB in history to throw for fewer than 5 yards," another user wrote.
