Texas Teen Sues Parents for "Forcing" her To Get an Abortion

A 16-year-old Texas girl is suing her parents after they allegedly attempted to force her to have an abortion when they learned she was pregnant.

The pregnant teen called the Texas Center for Defense of Life and told them about her situation. They have since filed a lawsuit on her behalf on Sunday, arguing that her parents violate “her federal constitutional rights to carry her child to term by coercing her to have an abortion with both verbal and physical threats and harassment.”

They said the teen was “beside herself” when she called the center for help. Lawyer Stephen Casey, who is representing the teen, said he has taken on many similar cases.

“These girls are in a bind, particularly in a situation where their parents are forcing them to do something they don’t want to do,” Casey said. “Regardless of the [situation], that’s her parents and she should expect support from them in this situation, not resentment and anger,” he said.

After the teen found out about her pregnancy, she told her father, who immediately became “extremely angry” and became insistent that she have an abortion. He said it was not up to her to decide.

She also said her parents took away her phone, pulled her out of school, forced her to get two jobs and took her car in order to make “her miserable so that she would give in to the coercion and have the abortion,” the suit said.

Her lawyer said there is evidence of threatening text messages sent from her father, and the girl’s mother also suggested slipping her an abortion pill.

The teen is nine weeks pregnant and said that she and the baby’s father want to raise it.

In the suit, they ask that the court declare she has a right, under federal constitutional law, to choose what she wants to do with the baby. The suit also asks for a temporary restraining order from her parents.

When asked if they had any comments about the case, the parents did not respond, but the teen’s father said her allegations are false. He said someone is forcing his daughter to proceed with the lawsuit.

Her parents now have 20 days to file a response.
