High school can be a cruel place, one where pranks, bullying and cliques are commonplace. One group of students from Grand Prairie High School in North Texas proved recently that the power of friendship still trumps these negative realities of adolescent life.
The story centers around Lillian Skinner, a senior at Grand Prairie High that friends say always has a smile on her face. For some reason, a group of students at Grand Prairie decided to prank Skinner and tell her she was on the homecoming queen ballot when, in fact, she wasn’t. Two of Skinner’s good friends who actually were nominated heard about the prank and decided to do something about it.
Naomi Martinez and Anahi Alvarez decided that if either of them won, they’d give Skinner the crown.
“We promised each other and we were like, ‘No matter what, no backing down. If one of us wins we’re giving Lillian the crown,’” Martinez told NBC Dallas Fort Worth.

During the school’s homecoming football game on Friday, it was announced that Alvarez won. That’s when Skinner, who was on the field taking pictures of Alvarez, got her surprise.
Principal Lorimer Arendse made the announcement.
“Anahi is honoring a very hard working senior with her crown. We would like to announce Lillian Skinner, please step up and receive this honor,” Arendse said in front of the crowd. A thankful and confused Skinner stepped forward and had the crown placed on her head.
“I was surprised,” Skinner told CBS Dallas Fort Worth. “I was like, ‘my name is not on the poll. How is it that possible?’ It was tears of happiness.”
