A shocking photo showed the exact moment a California man was attacked by a sea lion, pulled overboard and dragged for 20 feet.
Daniel Carlin, a 62-year-old Carmel Valley resident, was posing for a picture with a large fish he caught in San Diego when a sea lion suddenly jumped over the side of the boat and caught the fish in its jaws. The sea lion also grabbed hold of Carlin’s arm and pulled him overboard with “unbelievable force.”
“A 300-pound sea lion grabbed the fish and pulled the man over the side into the water and dragged him 20 feet through the water,” San Diego Fire-Rescue spokesman Lee Swanson said.
Carlin’s wife, Trish, helped her husband back onto the boat, where he lay bleeding until being taken to the hospital. He was treated for bite wounds and cuts to his hand and leg.

“The minute Trish said 'smile,' a sea lion came up and grabbed my hand and the fish at the same time, ripped my arm straight down right here, crushing my chest with unbelievable force,” Carlin said. “It was terrifying. When the sea lion was taking me down and I was going at that rate of speed I knew I was going to die. This wasn’t this could be it — this was this is it.”
Mike Perry, who owns a boat next to Carlin’s, said his experience with diving undoubtedly played a role in his survival. “He does a lot of diving, so he didn't panic. He probably knew the sea lion would have to let him go or did something to force it to let him go.”
Carlin was released from the hospital soon after being treated for the attack.
