A teenage girl and boy have been arrested in Morocco for violating public decency after a photo of them kissing was posted on Facebook. Another teen who took the photo is also being held.
The teenage couple in the photo are reportedly 15 and 14 years old and the teen who took the photo is 15 years old. The photo was taken outside their school in the northeastern town of Nador, according to BBC News.
A local newspaper reportedly printed the photo and that caused a public outcry. A complaint was lodged with the police and an investigation followed.
“It involves a teenage boy and his girlfriend. They were arrested on Thursday for violating public decency by posting a photo of them kissing,” said Chakib al-Khayari, president of the Rif Association of Human Rights, according to AFP.
The Blaze reports that they are being held in a juvenile detention center and that their friends and supporters are holding a sit-in outside the facility to demand their release, according to AFP.
The three are due to appear before a juvenile court next week.
BBC News also notes that Ibtissame Lachgar, co-founder of the Alternative Movement for Individual Liberties (MALI), has launched a campaign to post one million copycat photos online in support of the teenagers.
The issue has also been taken up by preachers in several mosques in Nador. They are telling parents to keep a closer eye on their kids
