Teen Raises $12k For College After Parents Cut Her Off

| by David Bonner

A Tennessee high school senior has raised more than $12,000 for her college tuition, alleging that her parents cut her off because they don't approve of her boyfriend.

Allie Dowdle, 18, says that when she started dating Michael Swift, a black student, her dad told her she was not allowed to see him again, reports the Daily Mail.

Swift, 19, is a freshman at Clemson University in South Carolina, where he studies sports communication and plays on the soccer team. How the young couple met is unclear, but Dowdle is also a student athlete who played soccer at her high school this year.

"My parents have chosen to no longer support my future, stripping me of all my resources including my personal savings, my car, my phone, and my education and leaving me on my own to pay for college," she wrote on the GoFundMe page.

Her father, Bill Dowdle, admitted that he would prefer his daughter to date a white person, because of the bias against interracial dating in the South, according to what he told the New York Daily News.

However, he insisted that he is not a racist himself, and that he and his wife would accept whomever their daughter wanted to date. He says they disapproved of Swift primarily because Allie had been dating him secretly. He cut off her college money because "she needed to go out in the world and grow up."

But Allie contends that she is unable to get a job because she doesn't have adequate transportation. On her GoFundMe page, she wrote that the $12,000 would "cover the first year of my remaining out of pocket tuition for college."

"My actions reflect my conscious decision to do what I believe is right. To my family, I say once again I am genuinely sorry for any pain I have caused you, but I do not regret my decision to support my future through a GoFundMe campaign," she said.
