A high school girl was reportedly shamed by one of her teachers for choosing to wear an African-themed dress to prom.
Makalaya Zanders, a student at Garfield Heights High School in Cleveland, Ohio, decided to wear the dress after seeing model Jessica Chibueze wearing one to a ball. Zanders reportedly discussed the idea with a teacher, who told her it was too “tacky for prom,” Daily Mail reported.
“Thank you to everyone who gave me kind words on my prom dress," the teen wrote in an Instagram post of her wearing the dress, The Voice reports. "My date doesn't have social media so he's kinda nonchalant lol. The dress came after seeing the beautiful @jessnnecee wearing one similar to a ball."
“After discussing how beautiful it was and that I would do a African theme with a (Caucasian) teacher I was told it wasn't really 'something you wear to prom/tacky for prom,'" the post continued. "Hellbent on proving them wrong and being someone who loves our culture and African glamorous style, me and @indelible_dc decided to take the Ankara dress and put a twist on it."

"Little did I know it came out more beautiful, then I could've ever imagine!!," the post concluded. "My dress was to make a point. That African style is beautiful. That I am comfortable with my Melanin and roots. And finally that there's nothing like Black girl Magic.”
Zanders later wrote an update, thanking people for their encouragement.

“I would not like to focus on the comment made by a teacher mainly because she apologized, and do not want this to overshadow the gown,” she wrote, according to the Daily Mail. “This is not about black or white, just appreciation of our heritage.”
Zanders’ dress quickly went viral, with many complimenting it and criticizing the teacher for shaming the girl.
