| by Michael Allen

A school resource officer was filmed body-slamming a teen girl to the floor at Rolesville High School in North Carolina on Jan. 3 (video below).

The girl, Jasmine Darwin, told WRAL that she was trying to break up a fight between another student and her sister when the cop grabbed her.

"Every time I look at it, its embarrassing," Jasmine told the news station. "I didn't even realize it happened. I was in shock."

Jasmine's version of the story is backed up by Ahunna Akpuda, another student who filmed the incident and posted it on Twitter.

Ahunna told The Associated Press that two girls had been fighting, and the girl who was body-slammed (Jasmine) tried to break up the fight.

"He drags her farther away from the actual fight after it was broken up," Ahunna recalled. "That’s when he proceeds to lift her up and slam her down to the ground."

"When I'm looking at this video, I'm like 'Oh my god, this cannot be happening to my child," Jasmine's mother, Desiree Harrison, told WRAL. "That's not how you handle a child. She's only 100 pounds. He could've killed her."

According to Harrison, her daughter suffered a concussion from the impact of the body slam.

Rolesville Police Chief Bobby Langston said the State Bureau of Investigation is going to review the incident.

Rolesville High School principal Dhedra Lassiter released a statement on the video, notes WTVD:

The safety of our students is always our first priority. Our school district works with many dedicated officers who protect our students. It is vital that our children have a positive relationship with these law enforcement officials. Those relationships are built on mutual respect.

I understand this incident brings up questions and conversations about the manner in which we keep students and staff safe in our schools. We will continue to be in conversation as we learn additional information.
