Edgar Lopez, 18, was reportedly angry because his girlfriend hadn’t cooked him any food and reacted by throwing their 1-year-old son against the wall of their Phoenix home.

The assault occurred on April 20. Lopez was arrested May 5, just three days before his 19th birthday.

Lopez’s unnamed girlfriend said he grabbed her by the hair and threw her onto the ground before throwing their child, who fell onto a couch after hitting the wall. The infant was taken to the hospital, where medical personnel determined he suffered a skull fracture.

Lopez told police he argued with his girlfriend and threw her onto the ground in self-defense, after she grabbed his neck. He admitted to throwing his son, but said he threw the infant on the couch, "where he may have struck his head.”

Lopez has been charged with child abuse and reckless assault.
