"Teacher of the Year" Dawn Kavanaugh Arrested for Stabbing Boyfriend to Death

| by

A teacher in North Carolina, who had recently been nominated “Teacher of the Year,” was arrested after she stabbed her boyfriend to death.

Dawn Kavanaugh taught social studies at Lakeshore Middle School. She is now suspended with pay and is being charged with murdering Ronald Ketchum.

She and Ketchum were allegedly arguing at the house when things escalated and she stabbed him in the chest.

Neighbor Matt Niemiec said, “He was lying in his driveway, partially on the ground, on the driveway. There were four people standing around him. He had blood all over his sweatshirt. Kept saying he was stabbed and call the police.”

Police were called and Ketchum was taken to Lake Norman Regional Medical Center, then transferred to Carolinas Medical Center, where he died.

At first, no one wanted to call the police because they said Ketchum was drunk. But Niemic took charge and dialed 911.

“To be honest with you, I was confused because there’s four people standing there looking at somebody on the ground clearly in pain, just saying he was drunk, but didn’t seem to be doing anything about it,” he said.

Students of Kavanaugh’s are understandably shocked by the ordeal. The school sent an email to parents saying that she will be replaced with a substitute until they are able to find a suitable long-term replacement.

Chris Penley, principal of the school, said in the email: “While we are shocked and saddened by this news, we are committed to keeping the lines of communication open with you to ensure our students are impacted as little as possible.”

They also said they have extra counselors on campus to speak with students concerned about the incident.

Dawn Creason, spokesperson for Iredell-Statesville Schools, said, “We were shocked. Quite honestly, just completely shocked.”

The teacher had worked for the school for more than eight years.

Along with receiving Teacher of the Year for 2012-2013, she also received the Lakeshore Lakers Saver Award for 2011-2012.

Murdered boyfriend Ketchum had a lengthy criminal record, including robbery, larceny, drug possession, and DWI, dating back to 1993.
