A New Jersey high school teacher who is accused of having sex with six of her students allegedly has a brain condition that leaves her susceptible to the teenager’s aggressive behavior.
Nicole DuFault, 36, pleaded not guilty to aggravated sexual assault as well as child endangerment in April, NJ.com reported. According to her lawyer Timothy Smith, she suffers from a “frontal lobe syndrome” that renders her impulses out of her control.
The condition is the result of a brain surgery she had after her first pregnancy, Smith said on Tuesday. DuFault is a single mother of two.
DuFault taught language arts at Columbia High School in Maplewood, New Jersey, when she was arrested in September 2014 for allegedly having sex with six male students.

The alleged victims of her assault range from 14 to 15 years old. The sexual encounters reportedly occurred throughout 2013 and 2014.
The encounters between DuFault and the students allegedly occurred on school property as well as her car.
One student allegedly filmed a cellphone video of DuFault performing a sex act on another student.
Prosecuting attorney Gina Iosim believes that DuFault is still at fault for the alleged crimes.

“All too often victims of sexual abuse are demonized by their abusers,” Iosim said. “It takes a tremendous amount of courage for a victim, especially a juvenile victim, to come forward knowing the stigma some in society place on victims of sexual abuse. We continue to prepare for trial so our juvenile victims may find the justice they are seeking.”
