A prom picture taken by seven students in Elizabeth, Colorado, on May 2 has offended some people.

Two females in the picture held guns, one of the boys wore a cowboy hat and all of the teens posed with a Confederate flag (video below).

The students reportedly attend Chaparral High School in Parker, Colorado.

After the picture was posted on social media, it apparently caused shock and outrage among some parents and students.

The mother of one of the students in the picture, who did not want to be identified, told FOX 31 Denver, "When he got out there he was surprised that guns were brought out, the Confederate flag was brought out. There were other parents there fully supporting it and taking pictures."

“I think in their immaturity they kind of think it's sort of a cowboy type of thing, but then to have some parents that support it and feed into it and don't explain that it borders on racism is really upsetting to me,” the mother added.

Arturo Aldama, an ethnic studies professor at the University of Colorado-Boulder, stated, "The image is pretty disturbing, especially if they have real assault rifles in their hands. Not to mention, the Confederate flag and its legacy of white supremacy, Klan violence and the Jim Crow South."

A student at East Chapel Hill High School in North Carolina recently posted a picture on Instagram that showed two girls waving Confederate flags and the caption, "South will rise."

ABC11 notes the picture was taken during a school field trip to Gettysburg two weeks ago. The picture was removed, and the student offered an apology.
