A Canadian student who suffered brain trauma from a car crash that caused her to become an impulsive dominatrix was rewarded the equivalent of $1.5 million in damages.

Alissa Afonina, who was in the top 2 percent of her class in high school, suffered severe brain damage after the car she was traveling in with her family ran off the road and into a ditch on its side. Both Afonina and her mother sustained severe injuries from the crash, which happened in 2008.

When she returned to school, Afonina began having outbursts, had trouble following through on tasks, made sexually inappropriate comments and, according to the Daily Mail, “showed no impulse control.” Afonina eventually became isolated and dropped out of school. After attending college for a short time, she began working as a dominatrix, under the name of Sasha Mizaree.

This judge looked an inmate square in the eyes and did something that left the entire courtroom in tears:

In court in January, the young woman’s attorneys said the brain trauma she suffered caused impairment to her cognitive function and led her to make decisions that lacked “critical thinking.”

The attorney for Peter Jannson, the boyfriend of Afonina’s mother who was driving the car when the accident occurred, argued that her work as a dominatrix proved her ability to maintain employment and make a living. Justice Joel Grove, while acknowledging both arguments had valid points, ruled that Jannson was driving too fast and deemed him negligent.

Grove also said Afonina’s brain damage prevented her from reaching her academic and employment goals. The young woman was awarded $825,000 for “future capacity loss,” $376,000 for the cost of future care, $300,000 for “pain and suffering” and $23,000 for special damages.

Afonina’s mother, Alla, was also rewarded $943,000 in damages for the brain injuries she suffered.
