A 28-year-old California man is in jail and faces three counts of attempted murder after he allegedly placed a pipe bomb under his ex-wife’s car. She was out with the couple’s two kids when she noticed something suspicious under her SUV.

Steven James Sunny was arrested for allegedly planting an explosive device under his ex-wife's car, forcing authorities to evacuate a shopping center for nearly an entire afternoon, police said, according to the Los Angeles Times.

Sunny was arrested on Monday at a home in San Bernardino on suspicion of three counts of attempted murder and possession of an explosive device with intent to kill.

The New York Daily News reports that police said they recovered evidence at his home at two of his properties in San Bernardino and Victorville. He is being held in San Bernardino County jail in lieu of $1 million bail.

"We're pretty clear that the woman was targeted by her ex-husband," Redlands Police Spokesman Carl Baker told KABC-TV. "This ties in to a domestic dispute."

Hundreds of people had to be evacuated after the pipe bomb was found in the parking lot of the Redlands Town Center. A bomb squad team used a robot device to remove the suspicious device and safely detonated it.

Police said the couple's two small children were in the vehicle when the device was discovered.
