Steve Harvey apologized after making a major mistake and announcing the wrong winner at the 2015 Miss Universe pageant (video below).
Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, had just been announced winner of the pageant when Harvey walked back on stage and interrupted the celebration.
“Folks, I have to apologize,” Harvey says in the video as Gutierrez wiped away tears of joy from her face and the crowd cheered.
“The first runner-up is Colombia," he explains.
Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach, is then seen staring confusedly at the audience as Gutierrez begins to realize that she’s been wrongly crowned. Miss USA then whispers to Wurtzbach that a mistake had been made.
“Miss Universe 2015,” Harvey clarifies, “is Miss Philippines.”
Wurtzbach then makes her way to the front of the stage, with both women appearing to be in shock from what has just occurred.
“Folks, let me take control of this," Harvey says as the audience reacts to the mistake.
“This is exactly what’s on the card," he adds, before showing the results card to the camera.
The show then ends abruptly, with Wurtzbach not having the opportunity to take her first walk as Miss Universe. Harvey later tweeted an apology for the mix-up.
“I want to apologize emphatically to Miss Philippians and Miss Columbia,” he wrote.
“This was a terribly honest human mistake and I am so regretful," he added. "I don’t want to take away from this amazing night and pageant. As well as the wonderful contestants. They were all amazing. Secondly, I’d like to apologize to the viewers at that I disappointed as well. Again it was an honest mistake.”
