Malia Obama's Stalker Detained After He Proposes To Her

| by Lauren Briggs

Malia Obama is lucky to have Secret Service protecting her, after an encounter with an alleged stalker in New York City left her badly shaken and potentially in danger.

On April 10, Malia's security officers detained 30-year-old Jair Nilton Cardoso after he reportedly followed her into a building where she was interning and harassed her, according to the New York Daily News.

The agents reported the man to the Manhattan police department; authorities have not yet filed charges, but they are reportedly considering doing so on counts of stalking or harassment.

Malia is the eldest daughter of former President Barack Obama. She is interning at the Weinstein Company in the spring while living in New York City, as she completes a gap year before attending Harvard in the fall, notes Page Six. Malia has also interned on the set of HBO's "Girls" during the summer of 2015 and also worked as a production assistant for Steven Spielberg-produced CBS show "Extant."

The ordeal with Cardoso began when the suspect reportedly followed the former first daughter to another one of her internships, located in Tribeca, New York, and went up to the fourth floor before holding a sign up against a window and loudly asking the 18-year-old to marry him, witnesses said.

Two Secret Service agents escorted the man outside, although he resurfaced two days later with dark sunglasses and a folding walking cane, posing as a blind person. Cardosa stood outside the Weinstein Company building in the West Village, inside which Malia was working at the time, and kept an eye on her. The agents confronted the man, took down his information and made him leave, while the former White House resident slipped out of the office through a side door.

On April 13, the agents visited the man's apartment in Brooklyn and spoke with him. They took him to a nearby hospital for a psychiatric evaluation after they determined that he had undisclosed mental problems.

TMZ reports that, during the second incident, agents identified the man as somebody who had previously tried to enter the White House without proper authorization on multiple occasions.

Malia kept quiet about the situation as it unfolded and never felt as if her safety were truly at risk, since the agents quickly handled each incident, a source said.

"She didn't want to make a stink," the person told TMZ.
