Spanish Teacher Petrona Smith Allegedly Fired For Saying ‘Negro’ In Class

| by

A foreign language teacher at a junior high school in the Bronx was fired in March 2012 for trying to teach her class how to say basic colors in Spanish. 65-year-old Petrona Smith says that she was dismissed from P.S. 211 after a misunderstanding about her use of the word “negro” which means “black” in Spanish.

One of Smith’s students was apparently offended by the word and reported her to school officials. Somehow the context of Smith’s use of the term was missed and she was terminated. What makes the whole situation even more ridiculous is that Smith is black and the school is bilingual.

Smith filed a lawsuit against the school protesting her firing, The Inquisitr reported.

Her attorney Shaun Reid said: “They haven’t even accounted for how absurd it is for someone who’s black to be using a racial slur to a student.”

The school has yet to respond to lawsuit. In another strange twist, the New York Post reports that the boy who tattled to school officials about Smith was lying.
