A South Korean soldier allegedly went on a rampage and killed five men in his team because they drew pictures of him as SpongeBob SquarePants, officials said.
The soldier, whose last name was Yim, was detained by military officials near North Korea last month. Authorities say that he saw the pictures that other men in his unit had drawn of him and became very offended and disturbed by them, according to the Daily Mail.
He then shot other members of his team and ran into the forest where he tried unsuccessfully to kill himself.
Yim had shot himself in his abdomen when authorities found him and tried to get him to surrender. In the process, they threw him a phone so he could talk to his father.
After he was caught, Yim said that the drawings of him as SpongeBob SquarePants had caused him stress and had reminded him of previous times he was mocked by other unit members, said Brig. Gen. Seon Jong-chul from the army police.
When YIm first was getting started in the military, tests placed him in a group of troops who needed special attention, but he was allowed to go to the front line after tests later on suggested that he was ready for battle.
South Korea requires all able men to serve two years in the military.
