A soldier was fatally stabbed in the chest when he tried to intervene and protect a woman who was being attacked.
The 36-year-old woman was being stabbed in the back during an off-base incident.
According to multiple reports, the crime occurred early in the morning on Sunday at a house in Graham, Wash., where a group of people had gathered for a party. Detectives told KIRO TV that after a woman told her ex-boyfriend that she didn't want to see him anymore, he snapped.
"The girl rejected him, or they'd been on some dates, either way he ended up getting mad about it and stabbed her in the back," said Detective Ed Troyer.
After attacking the woman and stabbing the soldier, Chase Devyver, 29, allegedly stole the woman’s credit cards and fled the house.
The officers followed him in high-speed chase, which ended when Devyver drove into a power pole. Police had to use a Taser to subdue him.
The 34-year-old Joint Base Lewis-McChord soldier, who remains unnamed, was pronounced dead at the scene by police officers. The woman was taken to the hospital, and is expected to survive her injuries.
