A 6-year-old girl from Atlanta, Georgia, fatally shot herself with her father's gun after finding it in sofa cushions early on Nov. 28.

It was originally believed her 25-year-old father, Demarqo Smith, shot the girl, but further investigations revealed she had shot herself, the New York Daily News reports.

Smith was arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless conduct. He is currently being held at the Fulton County Jail without bond.

The family has created a GoFundMe account to help pay for the 6-year-old's funeral expenses. Ja'Mecca "India" Smith is described as "the youngest child of seven born to a single mother" who "loved to dance, sing, and play with toys from Frozen."

“It was a child,” neighbor Ellis Jackson told The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “It’s a tragedy to happen to the family."

Similar tragedies have occurred among other Georgia families in the past six weeks; at least four children in the state have been killed in accidental shootings.

One of the youngest casualties involved 2-year-old Jayden Jamar Clay, who shot and killed himself on Nov. 11 after playing with a handgun he found at home. Christopher Dwayne Askins, the boyfriend of Jayden's mother, was charged with second-degree cruelty to children.

According to advocacy group Everytown for Gun Safety, a total of 15 children from Georgia have been killed or injured in accidental shootings in 2015, The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports.

“It’s literally terrifying, and this is happening all over the country,” said Dr. Viviana Goldenberg, a member of the Georgia chapter of Moms Demand Action. “There is no gun-owner responsibility. They’re not thinking of what measures to do to prevent access of the children to the gun.”
