A 6-month-old baby was found dead after being left alone in an SUV at Deltona Middle School in Florida, police say.

On the afternoon of Sept. 18, the baby was found dead in the backseat of an SUV belonging to a teacher at Deltona Middle School in Deltona, Florida, WESH reported.

The teacher caring for the infant, whose name has not been released, has not been arrested. Police have not yet said how the teacher and child are related.

The unnamed teacher reportedly went into the school Friday morning, leaving the baby in the car, and by the time school was out around 4 p.m., the baby had passed away.

"It appears as though it was obvious that when the school resource officer came out here that the child had been dead for a length of time," said Volusia County Sheriff Ben Johnson. "That there was no sense in trying."

Johnson added that it is too early to tell if this is a criminal case.

Temperatures on Friday in Deltona were in the mid-80's. The vehicle's windows are tinted, but there were no trees providing shade to the car.

The baby's cause of death is yet to be released, though it is suspected that heat was a factor.
