Shrink Calls Dad “Unfit Parent” for Refusing to Take Son to McDonald’s

| by

New York Attorney David Schorr is suing his son’s psychiatrist, Marilyn Schiller, for branding him as unfit parent — reportedly for refusing to take his son to McDonald’s.

According to Schorr, Schiller told the judge in his custody case that he was “wholly incapable of taking care of his son.” Schorr is currently fighting for custody rights with his estranged wife, Bari Yunis Schorr.

The incident in question occurred when Mr. Schorr was set to take his 4-year-old to their regular eatery, the Corner Café. The boy demanded McDonald’s instead, and proceeded to throw a tantrum. Schorr told his son that they would either go anywhere besides McDonald’s, or they would eat no dinner at all.

“The child, stubborn as a mule, chose the ‘no dinner’ option,” said Schorr. “It was just a standoff. I’m kicking myself mightily.”

Schorr also said, “I wish I had taken him to McDonald’s, but you get nervous about rewarding bad behavior. I think it was a 1950s’ equivalent of sending your child to bed without dinner. That's maybe the worst thing you can say about it."
Schorr now wants the psychiatrist to return the $2,750 he paid for her work.  He claims that he has had partial custody of his son for the past 2-1/2 years, and that no other incidents have occurred.

“Even my mother, the strictest mother in the world, said, ‘Why didn’t you just take him to McDonalds? What were you thinking? You know that this is a divorce situation,’” said Schorr

Although Schorr’s wife did not comment — and only one side of the story has been reported — The Mayo Clinic notes that giving in to temper tantrums is likely to make children believe that they will always get their way by throwing a fit.

When Schorr returned the boy to his mother, she reportedly “immediately took him to McDonalds.”
