Shannen Doherty Shares Shocking News On Instagram (Photo)

| by Sean Kelly

Actress Shannen Doherty announced on Instagram that her cancer is in remission.

In an emotional post on April 28, Doherty, known for her role on TV shows like "Charmed," broke the news to her fans of her cancer's remission after years of struggling. In a photo that accompanied the announcement, Doherty was pictured in all black and hiding from the camera -- seemingly in tears.

"Moments. They happen. Today was and is a moment," she wrote in the post, the Daily Mail reports. "What does remission mean? I heard that word and have no idea how to react. Good news? YES."

The post was mostly celebratory, but Doherty also addressed the harsh reality of her disease:

As every single one of my fellow cancer family knows, the next five years is crucial. Reoccurrences happen all the time. So with a heart that is certainly lighter, I wait, in the meantime, decisions. Reconstruction which is several surgeries. Decision on taking a pill for the next five years that comes with its own set of problems and side effects. I am blessed, I know that. But for now.... remission. I'm going to just breathe.

On April 27, Doherty shared a photo of herself preparing for a PET scan. The scan was likely the test that indicated her good news.

"Even with positive results, it's the next five years that determine so much," she wrote in her April 27 Instagram post. "So, let's see how today turns out and then day by day. Live life to the fullest. Cherish every second. Love fiercely. And thank God for every second."

In March, Doherty shared the feelings she had in regard to the "waiting game" that was to come after ending her treatment.

"Last day of chemo. Exhausted. Now that I'm done with chemo and radiation, the waiting game is here," she wrote at the time. "Waiting for test. Waiting to see if I'm clear or not. Waiting for reconstruction. Waiting. I think when one gets cancer, they are always waiting to a certain extent. To those who know... I'm waiting with you. #cancerslayer."

Fans and followers of Doherty applauded and celebrated the 46-year-old's remission announcement, though the American Cancer Society's chief medical officer, Dr. Otis Brawley, cautioned that remission doesn't always mean a person is entirely in the clear.

Brawley told Live Science that some cancers are more likely to return than others, and that the likelihood of a reoccurrence depends on the stage and type of cancer a person has. There are also different types of remission, with complete remission meaning that the patient has no evidence of cancer inside of them when doctors perform scans and examinations.
