A convicted sex offender was charged on Saturday with sneaking into city jails, pretending to be an officer, and smoking cigarettes with inmates.

Matthew Matagrano, 36, snuck into the Manhattan Detention Center after he flashed a fake gold shield and pretended to be an officer.

Just a few hours after he was arraigned on impersonation charges, a union head discussed his outrage over the incident.

“We’re talking about a serious breach of security,” Correction union president Norman Seabrook said.

Matagrano, of Yonkers, NY, was finally caught on Friday after he tried to “rearrest” an inmate at Bronx Criminal Court. He was held on $50,000 bail.

“We are determined to get to the bottom of the matter - and we will,” Dora Schriro, New York’s commissioner of correction, said.

Apparently, this is not the first time Matagrano attempted to impersonate someone else. He was arrested previously for impersonating a Board of Education staffer in 2004 by flashing a fake ID. He wanted to sneak into elementary schools and go through confidential student files.

Those charges resulted in him serving three years behind bars.

He also served a year behind bars in 1996 after he sodomized a 15-year-old boy. This charge required him to register with the state as a sex offender.
