'Affluenza' Victim's Family Gets Multi-Million Dollar Payout

| by Allison Geller

The parents of “affluenza”-afflicted teen Ethan Couch will pay victim Sergio Molina $2 million in damages for the permanent paralysis he suffered from the devastating car crash.

The Associated Press reports that Tarrant County court documents show the settlement agreed upon by the Couch family's liability insurer.

Molina was one of 12 injured by the 16-year-old’s horrific drunk driving crash. He was left paralyzed from the neck down and now can only blink and smile.

Four people were killed as a result of Couch’s drunken spree. Driving his father’s truck with a blood alcohol level three times the legal limit for an adult, Couch lost control of the vehicle, killing a group of four people trying to repair a car on the side of the road and injuring his passengers.

Molina was tossed out of the truck and landed on his head when the vehicle hit a tree. He has been in the hospital since the accident.

Couch’s parents will pay more than $1 million in cash and the rest in two annuities deposited in a trust for Molina.

Molina’s older brother, Alexander Lemus, said his family was not satisfied with the settlement.

"We're not happy about it, but we just have to take what we got and strive for better days," he said Tuesday.

Five other families of the victims have settled with the Couch family, with the settlements pending court approval. One family has asked for a jury trial.

Couch was sentenced to 10 years’ probation instead of jail time, which he was rumored to serve at a ritzy California rehab facility. It has since been learned that he is being treated at a state-owned, in-patient mental health facility, the North Texas State Hospital.
