A restaurant in Arkansas caused a stir with a message that was posted outside the establishment on Friday night.
The sign at Smokin’ Joe’s Ribhouse in the town of Rogers read: “Obamacare America’s Punishment for Slavery Years.” The owner of the restaurant said he took down the message just 45 minutes after it went up following several complaints from members of the community.
“I apologize for the sign,” restaurant owner Johnny Howard told 40/29 News. “It’s offending people, as it did. I didn’t intend for it to be racist-oriented at all.”
He added that the content on the sign was taken out of context and that his frustration is not with President Obama, but with the Affordable Care Act.
“To me this health care plan is a job killer,” Howard stated. “I myself will have to eliminate at least one location if all the policies that were written originally go through.”
The controversial sign at the restaurant was changed to read: “Why cook? Get some carry out.”
This isn’t the first time that slavery has been mentioned with Obamacare. Tea Party hero Ben Carson gave a speech at the Values Voter Summit Friday declaring Obamacare “the worst thing that has happened in this nation since slavery.”
“It is slavery because it aims to make all of us subservient to the government,” Carson said at the time. “It was never about health care. It was about control.”
