An Alaska man who went missing a year ago was found dead in his home Monday, after renters had been living in the house since April 2013.
Family reported Samuel E. McAlpine, 37, missing in March 2013, 12 days after he told his mother he was going out on a date and never returned.
McAlpine’s family wasn’t alarmed at first because he often went away for weeks at a time.
He was going through a divorce when he went missing and had moved out of the home he shared with his now ex-wife, Christine.

"They were unable to sell the home, so she rented it out to tenants,” said Anchorage Police spokeswoman Dani Myren.
Tenants moved into the home on April 1, 2013 and moved out one year later.
When his ex-wife arrived to clean and show the home to some new potential tenants, she smelled a foul odor. She traced it to a small storage space under the stairs, where she found McAlpine’s body.
Police do not suspect foul play in the death. They believe he died before tenants moved in and that drugs and alcohol played a role.
