Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church Bans Interracial Couples
The Gulnare Freewill Baptist Church in Pike County, Kentucky has voted not to accept interracial couples as members or allow them to take part in some worship activities.
Melvin Thompson, a minister at the church, explained to the Lexington Herald-Leader that the resolution “is not intended to judge the salvation of anyone, but is intended to promote greater unity among the church body and the community we serve.”
Thompson issued the ban in August after Stella Harville played the piano and her fiancé Ticha Chikuni (both pictured) sang. Harville grew up in the church and was baptized there, but she is not a member. Chikuni is a native of Zimbabwe.
The decision has caused sharp reaction and disapproval.
"It's not the spirit of the community in any way, shape or form," said Randy Johnson, president of the Pike County Ministerial Association.
