Protesters Call For Independent Probe Of Trump Campaign

| by Robert Fowler

Following President Donald Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey, protesters across the country took to the streets to call for an independent investigation into Trump's alleged ties to Russia.

Trump fired Comey on May 9, citing that he had lost confidence in the FBI director for his handling of the investigation into former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server.

The dismissal sparked controversy, given that Comey was leading an investigation into whether members of the Trump campaign had colluded with Russian intelligence to subvert the 2016 presidential race, according to CNN.

On May 10, protesters gathered in cities across the nation to call for an independent investigation into the Trump campaign's alleged ties to Russia. The protests ranged from large to small, flaring up in Chicago, Philadelphia and the District of Columbia.

In Chicago, a small band of protesters gathered before the Trump International Hotel and Tower. Cody Davis, an attendee, asserted that he was not protesting on Comey's behalf, but on the suspicion that the FBI director was dismissed for nefarious reasons.

"I still don't have any love for Comey," Davis told Reuters,. "I'm not here to defend him ... The reason I'm here today is not that he was fired but because it was so clearly because Trump was afraid of something."

Denny Herman, a self-described Trump supporter occupying a nearby bar, deemed the protests to be an overreaction.

"It's just liberal crap," Herman said. "We got bigger fish to fry."

The progressive advocacy group MoveOn.org organized several constituent protests before the offices of GOP, Reuters reports.

In Philadelphia, protesters gathered outside the office of Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania, calling upon him to support an independent investigation into the Trump campaign's communications with Russia during the election, Philly Voice reports.

"Donald Trump just fired the one man in America who was leading the most thorough and long-lasting investigation of Donald Trump," MoveOn.org Campaign Director Jo Comerford said in a statement. "There now is no question that we need an independent commission established immediately to ensure that there is a fair, non-partisan and independent investigation into Trump, his administration, and his associates."

Hundreds gathered before the White House, some waving signs calling for Trump to be impeached.

"I just had to come over at my lunch break and voice my concerns," protester Michelle Cochran told Mother Jones. "As horrible as our president is, I'm so upset and furious at all the Republicans in power who aren't doing their job, and that's where my fury is."
