A protest over the fatal police shooting of Corey Jones was held outside Florida's Palm Beach Gardens Police Department on Oct. 22 (video below).

Jones was shot and killed by Officer Nouman Raja, who was in plainclothes and driving an unmarked car, in the early morning hours of Oct. 18, when he came upon Jones' broken-down car on a highway exit ramp, notes

According to the Palm Beach Gardens Police Department, Jones was armed and confronted Raja, who shot him, but it is not known if Jones pointed his gun at Raja.

At the protest rally, Jones' family lawyer Benjamin Crump (pictured above, left) claimed that Raja fired his gun six times at Jones, who didn't fire his weapon. More than 700 people attended the rally.

Jones had a concealed weapons permit, and no criminal record. He was a local resident, and a drummer in a band.

Gossip Extra reports that Raja was originally on a surveillance assignment in the parking lot of a local hotel, forgot his police badge and radio, and used his cellphone to call in the shooting.

An unidentified law enforcement source told Gossip Extra:

"The officer was on a stakeout in the parking lot because they’ve had a rash of thefts in cars. He had no business leaving his post without his supervisor’s permission, which he didn’t have.

"[Raja] should have radioed for a marked unit to investigate Jones, which he didn’t do."

The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the shooting while Raja is on paid administrative leave.
