A Pennsylvania teen died after shoveling show outside of her home against her family’s wishes.
According to NBC Philadelphia, 18-year-old Briahna Gerloff collapsed after going outside to shovel snow around 9 a.m.
Family members said that Gerloff was eight months pregnant and had several heart defects, including Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome, which is an extra electrical pathway between your heart's upper chambers (atria) and lower chambers (ventricles) that causes a rapid heartbeat (tachycardia).
“I told her it probably wasn’t a good idea for her to be outside shoveling,” a family member said. “She wanted to do it anyway."

The family member told NBC Philadelphia that he went across the street while Gerloff went back inside. When he returned to Gerloff’s home, the front door was locked. He went through the basement and could not find her.
“I went upstairs, yelling her name, looking for her,” he said. “I went to the bottom of the steps and yelled her name." Gerloff was found unresponsive in the kitchen.
“I started doing CPR,” he said. “That’s when my neighbor came over and helped with CPR and tried to revive her and then the ambulance came."
After medics arrived, Gerloff and her baby, Kayliana, were both pronounced dead. The young woman’s mother died three years earlier, according to a friend. The same friend subsequently launched a GoFundMe page to help with funeral costs.

“She was a very good person,” the family member said, calling her “a caring and loving person” who “could not wait to be a mother."
The teen was working at Friendly’s restaurant at the time of her death. She was also a junior firefighter with the Phillies Fire Company, who mourned her on their Facebook page following the tragic death.
“Please keep Briahna, her unborn daughter Kayliana, family and friends in your thoughts as we mourn her loss,” they wrote.
