More Americans trust presumptive Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton to handle terrorism than presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump, according to an ABC News/Washington Post poll that shows the former secretary of state has had a consistent lead over the real estate developer on that issue.

The June 28 poll shows 50 percent of respondents trusted Clinton on terrorism while 39 percent trusted Trump. That's a significant increase since May, when the two candidates were virtually tied on the issue, with Clinton at 47 percent and Trump at 44 percent.

Clinton had a vast lead over Trump on terrorism for quite some time before then.

In November 2015, Clinton had a 50 to 42 percent lead over Trump and increased that to 54 to 40 percent in March 2016. And although her lead decreased in the weeks leading up to May, she reversed the negative course and then got a bump after the massacre at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, on June 12.

According to the ABC News/Washington Post poll, 59 percent of respondents thought Clinton showed a “better temperament” in response to the attacks than Trump, who impressed only 25 percent. And 44 percent said they believed Clinton had better proposals to prevent more attacks, compared to 34 percent who thought that about Trump.

The poll also found 72 percent of Americans are willing to let the government increase surveillance and intrude on privacy rights, which “follows a historical pattern of willingness to forgo privacy for safety when it comes to countering the threat of terrorism.”

Americans' willingness to erode civil liberties in the name of security goes beyond U.S. borders. Although more Americans trust Clinton on security than Trump nearly half of Americans -- 43 percent -- are in favor of Trump's proposal to ban Muslims from entering the country for an undetermined period.
