Hillary Clinton may view her presumptive nomination as an historic moment in American history, but most Americans don't feel that way, according to a new poll.

Only 4 out of every 10 people polled by Morning Consult called the former secretary of state's nomination "an historic moment," the polling firm said on June 14. Another 22 percent said it's a step forward for the country.

The poll surveyed 1,362 voters on June 8 and June 9, after The Associated Press and NBC News both announced Clinton had won the Democratic nomination by their tabulations.

Stephanie Schriock, president of the pro-choice group EMILY's List, told Morning Consult she believes Clinton's nomination will go down in history as one of the country's key moments.

“This is a big deal," Schriock said. "A stop-everything-you’re-doing-to-think-about-the-history-we-just-made big deal."

Clinton herself played up the historical aspect, tweeting that her victory was for “every little girl who dreams big.”

“Tonight’s victory is not about one person,” she told supporters in Brooklyn, reports The Wall Street Journal. “It belongs to generations of women and men who struggled and sacrificed and made this moment possible.”

Female voters helped the former first lady clinch the nomination -- while she split male voters with her rival, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders, Clinton enjoyed a wide margin among female Democrats, The Wall Street Journal said.

Meanwhile, Sanders hasn't suspended his campaign. A USA Today report on June 14 said the senator would meet with Clinton in Washington, D.C., where he seeks guarantees she will adopt some of his policies going forward.

“After we have that kind of discussion and after we can determine whether or not we are going to have a strong progressive platform, I will be able to make other decisions,” Sanders said.
