On Aug. 20, a multi-vehicle crash stopped traffic in Austin, Texas, and authorities now think a 13-year-old boy caused the accident that killed him and his 16-year-old passenger, KXAN reported.

According to the Austin Police Department, Johan Maldonado was driving the Toyota Tacoma which was T-boned by an 18-wheeler. Moldonado had run a red light, and the resulting crash caused a pile up. Both he and his passenger, Vanessa Maldonado, were pronounced dead within 90 minutes of the crash. Their relationship isn’t yet clear.

A third person who was in the vehicle survived but suffered serious injuries.

The driver of the 18-wheeler was unharmed, and another driver involved in the crash sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The teens’ deaths brought the number of traffic fatalities in Austin up to 71 so far this year. By this time last year, there were 41, according to KXAN.
