Social Media users and experts alike are mystified over what could have caused a piglet to be born with a monkey face in Cuba.

The facial malformation lead to in the mutant pig having a simian jaw, a significantly shorter snout and a protuberant forehead so that it resembled a monkey.

The odd-looking piglet has been dubbed 'monkey pig' after pictures of it appeared on social media and quickly went viral.

A YouTube clip of the peculiar creature (below) showed it being held by its owner as crowds assembled to get a closer look at it in the city of Ciego de Avila in central Cuba.

The pig rapidly became somewhat of a local tourist attraction, with people coming from various cities coming to take pictures of its extraordinary features before it died at just four days old.

“One of a kind, never seen before,” said one bystander after catching a glimpse of the baby animal.

The owner went to a vet and was told that the piglet had been born with a hereditary defect, which caused its bizarre appearance and premature death, according to local news.

A brain development disorder called Holoprosencephaly, which can cause the failure of eyes to correctly separate, may be the reason why the piglet’s eyes were located very close together.

Another theory could be environmental pollution for the mutation, though experts say that it may be that such occurrences always happened with a comparable incidence. Social media may be the cause of people’s awareness to bizarre mutations around the world.

Instances of strange porcine creatures have been recorded across South America and even east Asia. In 2008 a similar looking piglet with a monkey face owned by a family in Fengzhang village, Xiping township, China was born, according to Daily Mail.
