A police officer stopped oncoming traffic to rescue a puppy after the frightened animal was stranded on the side of a highway, and his good deed was captured on camera.
According to the Huffington Post, the video below shows the officer methodically stopping traffic on a busy roadway in the capital city of Lima, where at one point, a large truck barrels right past the cop. But most of the cars let him cross the dangerous highway to grab the little dog and return to the safety of the sidewalk.
“I was only doing my job,” Officer Juan Manuel Iman Zena, 34, told the Daily Mail.
"I could see that there was no way the young dog was going to make it back and it's amazing he even managed to get the central reservation in the first place," Zena was quoted as saying. "I knew it was about to be hit at any moment, and was worried that if a car tried to swerve it might cause an accident.”
Zena found a phone number on the dog’s collar and was able to track down its owners.
The video of the incident, shot by witness Carolina Carol, has gone viral after it was posted on YouTube and other social media platforms, BT.com reports.
“He saved it,” a child can also be heard saying in the video.
Cecilia Degregori, president of the Peruvian Animal Protection Association, wrote in the group’s Facebook page that it was great to see positive news about dogs and people for a change.
"Unfortunately, we see daily reports of cruelty and indifference against animals and we are fighting to change this attitude,” Degregori said. “However I must say to this policeman, with your behavior we are proud of you and the Peruvian police and we see in you hope for the future for change."
