Pennsylvania Woman Dies After Being Hit By State Trooper Who Blew Through Intersection

A Pennsylvania State Police officer was reportedly involved in an accident that killed an Edinboro woman on Saturday.

According to reports, Trooper Frederick Schimp was driving a 2013 Ford Explorer at 3:30 a.m. when he failed to stop at an intersection and struck 57-year-old Donna Platz. Police say that Schimp and Trooper Garrett Padasak, a passenger in the vehicle, were not responding to a call when the accident happened, and Platz was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy will reportedly be done on Monday, and as Erie County Coroner Lyell Cook explains, a quick autopsy is normal with these situations.

“That's protocol any time police or firefighters or public servants are involved in a death,” said Cook.

Both officers were taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries, and police say an investigation is ongoing.
