Pakistani Man Arrested For Cannibalism...Again

| by Jonathan Wolfe

For the second time in three years, Pakistani man Mohammad Arif has been arrested on cannibalism charges. Arif was taken into custody by police after authorities found a severed child’s head in his home. He admitted to eating the infant’s body.

In 2011, Arif and his brother Farman Ali were arrested after police found the missing body of a recently deceased woman at their house. A leg was missing from the body, and Arif and Ali confessed to eating it. The men served two years in prison for the offense.

This time around, police raided Arif’s house after neighbors reported a foul stench coming from the home. Police found the head of a two-day-old child inside. Arif says his brother dug the child's body up from a local graveyard and the two men ate it.

"Arif has been arrested and he has confessed that his brother brought the dead body of the newborn from the nearby graveyard," Bhakkar Police Chief Ameer Abdullah said. "Arif told police that both of them later cooked the dead body and ate it."

Cannabilism is not an official crime in Pakistan, so just as in 2011, the men will likely be charged with desecrating a dead body and public order offenses.

In 2013, police official Fakhar Bhatti spoke to the BBC about the mental scars he still has after discovering Arif’s first cannibalism offense in 2011.

"It still gives me the creeps,” he said. “They had chopped off one of her legs below the knee, and the other near the shin. The rest of the body was intact. The curry was made from those parts."
