The basic facts about the mass murder at an Orlando gay club are fairly clear.
The murderer, Omar Mateen, went on his rampage at about 2 a.m., armed with an AR-15-style assault rifle and a handgun, killing 50 and wounding 53. He was subsequently killed by a SWAT team about three hours later, reports The New York Times.
The basic facts about the killer are also known. At the time of the attack, the 29-year-old American citizen claimed allegiance to ISIS via a 911 call. However, he had been investigated by in 2013 and 2014 by the FB and it was concluded that he was not a threat.
Since 2007, he worked for a British-based global security company called G4S, based in Britain. One of his co-workers there accused him of making racist and sexist comments and said he talked about killing people.
Now, facts are also emerging about the strange behavior of Mateen’s father, Seddique Mateen.
In California, the father hosts the Durand Jirga Show on a television channel called Payam-e-Afghan, according to the Daily Mail.
He also appears in many YouTube videos in which he portrays himself as an Afghan analyst and leader, sympathetic toward the Taliban and hostile to the U.S.-backed Pakistan government, the Washington Post reports.
His opposition to U.S. support for the Pakistan government is evident in a Facebook post in which he is seen holding up a banner that reads: “We request from President Obama not to give weapons to Pakistan. Pakistan uses US weapons to kill AFGHAN men, women, kids and civilians. US will be responsible.”
During Afghanistan’s 2014 presidential election, he actually managed to interview Afghan president Ashraf Ghani, though a spokesperson for Ghani downplays it as just one unremarkable interview among many, the Post observes.
Seddique Mateen has also pretended to be the Afghan president himself.
Only a few hours before the Orlando shooting, he posted a video on a Facebook page called Provisional Government of Afghanistan, in which he appears to be pretending that he’s the president of Afghanistan while ordering the arrest of various Afghan politicians.
In his most recent YouTube video, he is shown declaring his candidacy for the Afghan presidency, even though the election has already been held.
Seddique Mateen seems to imply that his son's rampage was motivated by homophobia rather than politics. He said that his son got angry recently when he saw two men kissing in Miami, and suspects that it may be what led to the shooting, the Daily Mail notes. Seddique Mateen himself, in a Facebook post, wrote, “God himself will punish those involved in homosexuality," as reported by the Washington Post.
