The man responsible for the mass shooting at a Florida LGBT club in the early morning hours of June 12 reportedly spared the lives of a few hostages because they were black.

An eyewitness told ABC News 29-year-old Omar Mateen had asked all the club-goers to hand over their phones, The Blaze reports.

However, as he was collecting the phones, he asked some of the hostages a question that has puzzled many: "Are you guys black?"

When they answered "yes," the witness added that, "[Mateen] said, 'I don’t have an issue with the blacks.'"

Mateen then allegedly called either law enforcement or a news station and said, "America needs to stop bombing ISIS."

Police officers later revealed that Mateen talked to them on the phone, yet did not seem interested in negotiating.

"He was cool and calm when he was making those phone calls to us," Police Chief John Mina told CNN, according to The Blaze. "We had a team of crisis negotiators that did talk to the suspect just trying to get as much information as possible. … He really wasn’t asking for a whole lot. We were doing most of the asking."

"Then [Mateen] called someone he knew,” the witness told ABC News, "and he mentioned that he was the fourth shooter, and there were three others."

The witness said he overheard the conversation while hiding in the bathroom. At one point Mateen reportedly walked into that restroom and fired shots.

"One black boy came crawling underneath the stall, grasping our legs and having me and my friend drop to the floor," the witness said.

Mateen then washed his hands and allegedly approached the eyewitness.

"And then I felt something poke the back of my pocket," the witness said. " … It was like one quick touch or poke. … And he was probably thinking I’m dead."

The witness and his friend reportedly pretended to be dead for three hours, giving them the chance to overhear even more -- like the sound of "shells dropping on the floor."

Mateen had reportedly been cleaning his gun when the shells dropped.

“And he was happy that he got it fixed and he said, ‘Oh, I got plenty of bullets,” the witness recalled.
