A young single mother from Long Island, New York, was walking her dog when a car struck and killed both her and the dog on April 12.

Skye Brunetti, 25, was on her way to her home in East Islip after dropping her 5-year-son off at his school bus when 50-year-old driver Barbara Cottone mounted the curb and hit Brunetti, WABC reports. The car then hit a utility pole.

Both Brunetti and the dog were killed at the scene, while Cottone is in critical condition at a hospital.

A makeshift memorial now occupies the sidewalk where Brunetti was killed, scattered with notes from her son and relatives.

Brunetti’s family and friends say they mourn the loss of this “great” woman.

"She was the best person you could ever think of," brother TJ Lindner said. "And I loved her a lot."

"Wonderful mother, did everything for her son," friend Angela Abbatiello said. "She was always there for her son. She stayed home. She did what she had to do as a parent. She was great."

Friends created a GoFundMe account for the family and is trying to raise $40,000.

“Her son, Antonio was the world to her and she was loved by many. This fund will help the Brunetti family pay for funeral expenses. Please help this family in their tragic time of need,” the GoFundMe page notes.

It only took one day for loved ones and strangers alike to raise more than $39,000.

According to Brunetti’s friend, Ashley Evers, any additional money will be placed in a fund for Antonio.

“It breaks my heart that her son had to face the loss of his mother and his dog ... all in one day. Seems more than any adult could bear,” said Leigh Ann Rawlins.
