Authorities in Dayton, Ohio, say a dog attacked and killed a 7-month-old boy while he was in the care of his step-grandmother Sunday afternoon.
Police received a chilling 911 call from the family’s neighbor just before 12:30 p.m.
“She knocked on my door, banging on my door. She had a baby in her hand. The baby's not breathing. I need you to get here now!” the neighbor told the dispatcher.
A family spokesman, Reverend Victor Lee, told ABC News that the family owns an American Staffordshire terrier. The dog allegedly jumped over a gate and attacked the baby as his grandmother tried to save him.
“It's a good family and unfortunately this incident has happened so until all the facts are in we just have to bear with it and not spread rumors about what had happened,” Lee said.
"Information from other family members says the dog has been a pleasant animal for the family," Dayton Police Sgt. Charles Anderson said.
"They don't understand why the dog went off and attacked the small child," Anderson added.
This isn’t the first time the terrier was involved in an attack. Isabelle Crickmore filed a misdemeanor criminal complaint against the grandmother on June 3 after the dog allegedly attacked her beagle, ABC 22 reportsw.
A pre-trial hearing for Crickmore's complaint was postponed last week, according to court documents.
"It just really irks me because this could have been taken care of," Crickmore said.
