An 18-year-old Ohio man was found unconscious in China after reportedly becoming depressed when he was rejected by a young woman he traveled 7,000 miles to meet.
The young man, identified only as Pratt, reportedly met the woman online and fell in love with her after seeing photos and corresponding with her. Pratt told authorities that he'd promised the woman, whose name he did not know, that he would come visit her. Police said they believe she didn't take his promise seriously – until he showed up unannounced in the city of Jiangshan to see her. Pratt attempted to call her several times to no avail, and she ultimately blocked his number. He then became depressed by the rejection and started drinking.
Pratt eventually passed out next to the Xu River, where police found him unconscious and suffering from hypothermia.
"He was unconscious and lying in a pool of his own vomit. It looks as if he might have fallen in the water at some stage as his clothes and shoes were soaked. To be honest he was so inebriated, he could easily have drowned. It was only a short distance to the water," a Cheng Bei police spokesperson said, according to Qianjiang TV.
Authorities attempted to contact the young woman, who refused to see Pratt despite the near-death experience due to his heartbreak. Pratt later recovered and returned to the U.S.
"We followed his progress until he left the country, and he is already on the plane back to the United States," a police representative said.
