Florida office manager Ruth Amen allegedly threw an unauthorized surprise birthday party for her boss, thus inadvertently creating a paper trail of fraudulent charges.

Amen, 46, was arrested Monday for embezzling nearly $162K after working billing and payroll for Gulf to Bay Realty in Boca Grande for over a decade.

Amen used company money to throw a party for one of her bosses without permission from the company. Afterward, company officials scrutinized her bookkeeping methods and found unusual problems. The sheriff's office was notified and investigators with the economic crimes unit alleged she stole $181,674 in total.

According to police Amen used $92,000 to pay off personal credit card debt. She paid herself extra paychecks totaling $65,000 and did not deduct the cost of her insurance from her pay.
